Knowledge, Attitude, and Practice Regarding Needle Stick Injuries Among Health Care Workers in Baghdad Teaching Hospital and Ghazy Al-Hariri Hospital for Surgical Specialties in 2020

Background: Needle stick injuries are serious occupational hazards in the transmission of a variety bloodborne diseases, more than twenty pathogens can be transmitted through NSI including hepatitis B virus, C and human immunodeficiency virus (AIDS) among healthcare workers. Objectives: Assess knowledge, attitude practice health care workers towards needle injuries. Determine prevalence its predisposing factors. Methods: Cross-sectional descriptive study, convenient sample 260 was selected from Baghdad Teaching hospital Ghazy Al Hariri Baghdad, Iraq. Data were collected by an anonymous questionnaire January to June 2020. The data analyzed using statistical package for social sciences (SPSS version 23). Results Prevalence NSIs HCWs found 53.8%, which higher nurses (29.3%) laboratory technicians (28.5%) followed surgeon doctors (15.7%), assistant surgeons (13.6%) dentists (12.9%) .The highest number occurred recapping needles (41.4%) during drug administration (27.9%), hand (10.7%) blood drawing (7.9%). A proportion (64.5%) whom sustained injury had reported their Injury. Doctors scored better others regarding mean scores practice. There highly significant association (P<0.001). considerable percentage participants (80.2%) completely immunized against HBV. Conclusions: study showed high score knowledge high, moreover acceptable responses obtained most statements, except statements.
